THE MUSER'S GUIDE TO REVIEWS
Some stories are more compelling than others. Some make you feel deeply, others make you think. Some just gift a good laugh and leave a giddy little smile on your face. To leave you rolling in emotions, authors need you to connect with and invest in the tale tapestry they’re weaving. To gauge the impact I so desperately crave, I look at these elements:
worldbuilding
Geography. Culture. Customs. Language. Magic. Transport me into another world, whether contemporary or fantastical.
characterization
Make me love them. Make me hate them. Make me feel strongly about their experience, I beg.
Plot & Pacing
At the end of the day, the point of a story is that there is one to be told.
Spice
If I’m not giggling or gasping then I don’t want it.
Themes
Beneath the plot and cast are the undercurrents of important messaging that can elevate the experience from a tale told to reflective connection.
A menagerie of musings
This isn’t a single-genre library. Great stories are found across a multitude of genres, and I love different stories for very different reasons.
Immersive worlds. Compelling characters. High stakes. Shocking circumstances. Unique magic systems. Loyal friends. Clever maneuvers.
The vibes need to be great, sure, but I look for depth in each elements that sends shivers down my spine and satisfaction through my brain.
